Over the years, I have played around with indoor and studio photoshoots for my clients. But my favorite situation for my brand clients is to photograph them in their element, which is why I photograph them outside and at various locations. But for those interested in knowing why you should choose between one or the other, here are my thoughts and advice on picking whether or not you want to do a studio shoot or outdoor on-location shoot.
Outdoor on Location Shoots
Better tells your brand story: This is perfect for those who want to focus on their brand's story. When you do shoot on locations where you do the work, it helps people connect the dots and see you working. For example, if you are a realtor and you are photographed in a recognizable neighborhood, near houses, it truly tells the story that you are a realtor who knows the area. This can be very important since you want to demonstrate and showcase that you can seek your clients' desirable areas.
It feels more natural: Unlike Outdoor on Location shoots, it very unnatural for someone to be on a wall and take pictures. Sometimes studio shoots can feel very cold and artificial to the point that it doesn't feel natural while you are being photographed.
More variety in scenery: With on-location photoshoots, you can take pictures at your place of work, can take pictures outside, you can take photos on top of the roof. You can pretty much take pictures anywhere.
A Studio
No worries about the weather: One of the perks of doing a studio shoot is that you don't have to worry about the weather. Rain or shine, the photoshoot will go on.
Great for launching products: If you have a fashion line and want a clean and sharp look, studio photoshoots are the best. I must say that many fashion and product brands are looking for more of a lifestyle photoshoot where they are shooting outdoors instead of a studio shoot.
Consistency in Images: When I work with my corporate clients, I always talk about characters in images when they decided to get the team headshots. Nothing is worst when most of your team with the same background and look and feel and you have that one new associate who has aa iPhone self.
There are many other reasons you should take a studio shoot vs. an outdoor shoot. I always lean towards having an outdoor shoot because I want to make sure the pictures tell my clients' stories at the end of the day, and I can take images anywhere that allows me to do so.
